A new dog

Lexi went to the groomers today.  A little back story for you.  Lexi is a Cairn Terrier.  I have read up some on Cairn’s and how to care for their coat.  There is so many different reports on what to do.  Most recommend hand stripping though.  Which is basically pulling the dead hair out.  A very labor intensive job and can damage her coat if done wrong.  Cairn’s have a outer coat that is sort of like a rain coat so it keeps them weather proof.  Pretty nice that she can just shake it off and be dry in an instant.  Plus they can’t get bathed too often since that can also damage their coat.  Their natural oils are important for a nice looking coat.  Anyhow – it has been difficult to find someone in the area that knows what they are doing.  Most groomers aren’t trained to do hand stripping.  We started going to Heartstrings in Blacksburg in July.  Today was Lexi’s second time there.  While I am not there for the grooming part, I do know that Lexi loves to go since she loves to play with the other dogs.  She doesn’t have many doggy friends so it is a big treat for her to see the other puppies there.

I took some photos before and after.  Now, I realize that my before photos are pretty bad.  We were rushing to get out to the appointment on time and I had just woken Lexi up and it was still fairly dark outside so I didn’t have a lot of light to work with.  But it is really about the gorgeous after photos anyhow, right?  The bandanna they put on helps with that too!

Ok, so both of this photos are bad (trying to get Lexi’s attention by myself makes it more difficult to get some great shots but you get the idea of how they trimmed her skirt and legs.  Her legs are always a mess.  They did a great job trimming them up.  And the tail as well.

MUGSHOT! Poor L, I woke her up to take my before photos.  She was a sleepy puppy.  You can tell that her hair was all in her eyes and she was growing a beard.  After is much better.  I like that they left it a little longer than last time even though that just means going back sooner.:)

To give you an idea of our first visit.  He is a after photo of Lexi from July.  Her short hair on her face and ears really make her ears stand out.  haha.  Good cut for the hot summer though.

Thanks Heartstrings for taking care of Lexi so well! Oh, and the nice thing about going to the groomers or daycare is that they wear Lexi out!!! She comes home sooooo tired.

Carving Pumpkins

Ok, so I am a bit late in posting this considering Halloween was now almost 2 weeks ago but we took the pictures and I want to share.:)So here is our adventures in pumpkin carving.

I am a pro at getting the guts out. Don’t mind the fourth of july tablecloth we used. It is the only one that fits our square table.

Lexi was excited over the pumpkin carving. She just wanted to help. Ben & I both picked out what design we wanted to do. Originally, we were going to only carve one pumpkin and use a Mr. PotatoHead Pumpkin kit for the other. Because of this I ended up with the big pumpkin. Ben saw how much fun it was and decided he wanted to carve one too.:)We were also going to roast pumpkin seeds but then I never got around to it. Oh well.

I take pumpkin carving very serious.

Our finished products. Ben’s on the left and mine on the right. Happy Belated Halloween!
